Question 1

As daylight shortens in autumn, how do I move houseplants closer to a window without scorching them?

Accepted Answer

Move them in stages, not in one step. A leaf that has spent the summer two metres back from the glass has built a cuticle and a photosynthetic apparatus tuned to that light level. Drop it straight onto a south-facing sill and the excess photons go into photo-oxidative damage rather than sugar — you get bleached, papery patches within two or three days, and those patches never recover.

Question 2

My Monstera puts out big leaves but they have no splits. What actually triggers fenestration?

Accepted Answer

Fenestration is a light and maturity response, and light is the part most people get wrong. Monstera deliciosa produces entire leaves as a juvenile and begins splitting them only once the plant has enough energy income to justify the cost. In a dim room it will keep making large, whole, thin leaves indefinitely because the cheapest way to catch scarce light is maximum unbroken surface area.

Question 3

How do I actually get rid of spider mites rather than just knocking them back?

Accepted Answer

Spider mites fail to clear for one reason: the treatment interval does not match the life cycle. Eggs are unaffected by most sprays, and at typical indoor temperatures they hatch in three to five days. A single thorough spray kills the adults and nymphs, then a fresh generation emerges and you conclude the treatment did not work.

Question 4

What details should a photo include for a plant to be identifiable?

Accepted Answer

Most identification failures come down to missing information rather than image quality. A sharp close-up of one leaf is often less useful than a mediocre photo showing the whole plant, because habit and growth pattern narrow the field faster than leaf shape does.

Question 5

What is the most reliable way to root basil and rosemary cuttings?

Accepted Answer

The two behave very differently and treating them the same is why one usually fails.

Question 6

What soil and feeding regime do tomatoes need in containers?

Accepted Answer

Container tomatoes fail for two reasons far more often than any other: the pot is too small and the feed does not change through the season.
